Let Nothing Trouble You60 Reflections from the Writings of Teresa of AvilaDay 12 St. Martha: Our Role Model for Spiritual Service "Now as [Jesus] entered a village, a woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lords feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her." Luke 10:38-42Morning reading:Dont be afraid that you will fail to reach the perfection of those who are very contemplative. St. Martha was a saint, even though they do not say she was a contemplative. Well now, what more do you want than to be able to resemble this blessed woman who merited so often to have Christ our Lord in her home, give Him food, serve Him, and eat at table with Him? If she had been enraptured like the Magdelene, there wouldnt have been anyone to give food to the divine Guest. There must be people for every task. And those who are led by the active life shouldnt complain about those who are very much absorbed in contemplation . Let them consider how true humility consists very much in great readiness to be content with whatever the Lord may want to do with them, and in always finding oneself worthy to be called His servant. The Way of Perfection 17:4-5
For reflection:When I experience times of spiritual dryness and cannot feel your presence, Lord, give me strength to serve You faithfully until we meet again. |
